PG&E Power outages 9 October 2019

Posted: October 9, 2019

Pacific Gas & Electric early on 9 October 2019 shut off power to about 800,000 customers across Northern California as part of their mitigation to attempt to avoid wildfires caused by winds damaging power equipment, such as those caused near Paradise, CA last year.

NOAA-20 was fortunate to catch a clear image of Northern California at ~2:36am PDT. As can be seen in a comparison shot from just 4 days previous by S-NPP, there were large swaths from Red Bluff to Folsom, CA as well as in the Clear Lake area

A screenshot from the Pacific Gas and Electric outage website taken at ~4pm PDT shows that the imagery from the DNB corresponds roughly to the area in the outage region.

It is expected that there will be outages again on 10 October 2019 as winds will be strong in the region.
