Sunset Date for SDI systems

18 January 2013 McIDAS Help Desk email notification to SDI Site Coordinators:

The original SSEC Desktop Ingestor (SDI; bottom box on SDI Software page), which was developed in the mid-1990s, will be sunset on 31 December 2013. It is not possible for the MUG to continue to support these systems for two reasons: (a) we are not able to provide nor recommend hardware components if these would fail; (b) the operating system used is an unsupported version of Solaris, which has been lacking security updates for several years.

We see two options for current users of the original SDI:

  1. Upgrade to a SDI-104 during 2013: (recommended)
    • cost is the back-up price: $15,000
    • support continues at $8,340/year

  2. Upgrade to a SDI-104 after 2013:
    • cost is the price of a new SDI-104: $20,000
    • support starts at $8,340/year
    • Since the delivery time is 4-6 weeks after the receipt of a purchase order,  there is a chance you will not be covered under any support if your original SDI fails after the sunset date.
If you have any questions, please contact SSEC's SDI Program manager, Dave Santek.
