Applications of High-Resolution Wind Estimates in Storms from 1-Minute GOES-16 Imagery Using an Optical Flow Technique

Bob Rabin, NOAA/National Severe Storms Lab

  • Chris Velden, UW-Madison/CIMSS

  • Steve Wanzong, UW-Madison/CIMSS

An experimental product is being developed using 1-minute imagery from GOES-16/17 ABI imagery to provide high resolution wind estimates at 2-km resolution using an optical flow technique. Examples will be shown of how these winds may be useful in monitoring wind patterns and updraft intensity from the wind structure above thunderstorms and developing tropical storms. Real-time products available will be shown via a webpage.
