UW Day at the WI State Capitol

April 8, 2013 | Leanne Avila

The First Annual UW Day at the Capitol took place on April 4, 2013, and representatives from the Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) were there to showcase some of the science that takes place at the Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences building. Professor Jon Martin from the Weather Guys was on hand to talk to legislators and staff visiting the displays. Hundreds of students and private citizens streamed through the rotunda during the four hour event. Even Bucky Badger was there!

At the CIMSS/SSEC booth, the Web-based weather applets were a hit as usual – offering hands-on opportunities to learn more about the atmosphere. However, visitors were particularly amazed and impressed during discussions fostered by a poster of Hurricane Sandy; the image showed Sandy merging with a cold front as it was captured under moonlight by the VIIRS instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite.

UW Day at the Capitol was organized by UW Relations in order to highlight UW’s research activities and successes, allowing legislators to see them first-hand, as well as engage with the individuals behind all the hard work.
