The McIDAS Workshops are full-day sessions that will cover new data types and new features available in McIDAS-X and McIDAS-V.  Two courses will be offered on September 18, a basic McIDAS-X course and a basic McIDAS-V course, geared at new users of McIDAS.  Two courses will also be offered on September 19, an advanced McIDAS-X course and an advanced McIDAS-V course, geared at advanced users of McIDAS, as well as those who just completed the basic session.

McIDAS-X Training - Room 312

Day 1:  McIDAS-X Basics

Intended for new users of McIDAS-X, this training session will cover basic functionality of the software.  The introduction will begin with setting up the user environment, starting McIDAS, and command line structure.  The ADDE (Abstract Data Distribution Environment) will be used to set up local and remote datasets for data access.  Users will learn to access each of the basic data types (Satellite Imagery, Gridded Model, and Observational Point Data), as well as other data types like Text and netCDF.

Day 2: McIDAS-X Advanced Topics

Intended for users already familiar with the basics of McIDAS-X, this training session will cover some of the more advanced and newer functionality of the software:

  • visualizing and manipulating images from newer satellites such as NOAA-20, GOES-16/17 ABI and ABI L2 Products
  • displaying GLM lightning data
  • displaying RGB imagery
  • python scripting in McIDAS-X

McIDAS-V Training - Room 315

Day 1: McIDAS-V Basics

Intended for new users of McIDAS-V, this training session will cover basic functionality of the software and displaying data from a variety of data sources.  Users will learn to visualize real-time data from the GOES-16, -17 and NOAA-20 satellites, and to analyze polar satellite data using McIDAS-V’s hyperspectral functionality.  Users will learn to display real-time radar, point observation, and gridded model data.  The 3-D functionality of McIDAS-V will be featured when displaying gridded data.

Day 2:  McIDAS-V Advanced Topics

Intended for users already familiar with McIDAS-V, this training session will cover some of the more advanced functionality of the software.  Among the topics covered will be creating bundles and color enhancements to customize your display, using native formulas, and creating user-defined formulas. An introduction to scripting in the Jython Shell will be presented, featuring various scripting functions to load, manipulate and analyze data and to save the final display.
